DESCRIPTION:Wes Deadrick\, Director of NASA’s IV&V Program \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWes Deadrick is the Director of NASA’s Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) Program\, located at the Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) Facility in Fairmont\, West Virginia. He is responsible for the leadership and technical direction of the IV&V Program and agency-wide strategy to provide the highest achievable levels of safety\, reliability\, and cost-effectiveness for NASA’s most critical mission software. \n\n\n\nMr. Deadrick began his NASA career in 2002 at the NASA IV&V Program as a research engineer within the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance (OSMA) Software Assurance Research Program (SARP). After spending five years managing and performing software research and software tool development\, Mr. Deadrick accepted a position as an IV&V Project Manager. Over the period of six years\, Mr. Deadrick was responsible for leading the implementation of IV&V services on a number of NASA missions and programs including Juno\, Kepler\, MSL\, JWST\, JPSS\, MAVEN\, OSIRIS-REx\, and Constellation. During 2010\, Mr. Deadrick served on detail at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) as the software lead for a component of NASA’s Constellation Program. Subsequent to his role as an IV&V Project Manager\, Mr. Deadrick served as the Lead for the IV&V Program Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Support Office (SSO) where he was responsible for providing software assurance reach-back support to OSMA and the NASA Commercial Crew Program. As the SSO Lead\, Mr. Deadrick was also responsible for overseeing the initiation of the IV&V Program’s cybersecurity assurance capability. Prior to becoming the Director of the NASA IV&V Program\, Mr. Deadrick led the Program’s IV&V Office\, which is responsible for providing IV&V services to a broad portfolio of NASA’s most critical\, and highest profile\, science and human spaceflight missions. As Director\, Mr. Deadrick serves as a senior staff member for the Goddard Space Flight Center and the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance at NASA Headquarters. \n\n\n\nMr. Deadrick has earned several prestigious awards throughout his NASA career\, including the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal\, a Space Flight Awareness award\, numerous Project Achievement awards\, and the inaugural Terrence W. Wilcutt Award for excellence in advancing safety and mission assurance.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. James B. Garvin\, PI DAVINCI Mission to Venus\, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (Chief Scientist & Senior Fellow & 2024 Webby Awardee) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. James B. Garvin is the NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Chief Scientist. He provides strategic advice and analysis on the scientific priorities and directions to the Center Director and senior leadership\, as well as to NASA Headquarters. As a veteran Earth and planetary scientist within NASA in a career that has spanned more than 38 years\, Dr. Garvin brings his experience with interdisciplinary science and instrumentation in helping to direct the scientific trajectory of the Center. Prior to coming to Goddard\, Garvin served as the NASA Chief Scientist\, advising three separate Administrators on issues ranging from science strategies associated with the Vision for Space Exploration to those involved in rebalancing the NASA science portfolio. In addition\, Dr. Garvin served as the chief scientist for Mars exploration from 2000 until 2004 and spearheaded the development of the scientific strategy that led NASA to select such missions as the Mars Exploration Rovers\, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter\, the Phoenix polar lander\, and the Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity rover). He received two NASA Outstanding Leadership Medals for his work with the science behind the Mars Exploration Program. He is also the recipient of three Presidential Rank Awards for his contributions to science at NASA spanning his career. \n\n\n\nDuring his career\, he has been a Co-Investigator on the Mars Observer\, Mars Global Surveyor\, NEAR-Shoemaker\, Radarsat-1\,2/RCM\, Mars Curiosity Rover\, OSIRIS-REx\, and ENVISAT missions. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles and other popular articles about space exploration of Mars\, Venus\, and the Moon. Presently\, he is Principal Investigator of the DAVINCI mission to Venus\, slated for launch in June 2029\, and the first in situ mission to Venus since 1985. \n\n\n\nDr. Garvin earned his Ph.D in the Geological Sciences from Brown University in 1984 under the mentorship of Professors J. W. Head III and T. A. Mutch. He also received an MS from Stanford University in Computer Sciences and a second MS from Brown in Planetary Geosciences. He graduated with highest honors from Brown University in 1978 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 2005\, he was awarded the prestigious William Rogers award recipient (Brown University) for his contributions to society as a graduate of Brown.

His branch works across the critical infrastructure\, cybersecurity\, and space communities to build bridges and share essential information. Before joining CISA\, he served as a research staff member at IDA’s Science and Technology Policy Institute and as the Director for Critical Infrastructure at the White House National Security Council. Chris also spent more than a decade at the Department of State’s Office of Space and Advanced Technology\, working on a range of emerging technology and space policy issues\, including space exploration\, space sustainability\, and resilience of ground- and space-based assets. Prior to that\, he served as a research professor at Tufts University\, a postdoctoral associate at MIT\, and a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Milan. In this role\, he provides leadership and oversight of the development\, acquisition\, integration\, installation\, and acceptance of major system elements for NOAA’s operational environmental satellite systems. \n\n\n\nBefore joining NOAA\, Dr. Talaat was the Chief Scientist of the Heliophysics Division at NASA Headquarters. In this role\, he directed overall development efforts for the Heliophysics space science program in Solar\, Heliospheric\, Magnetospheric\, and Ionospheric\, Thermospheric\, and Mesospheric physics. Previously\, he was a Program Scientist at NASA Headquarters where he served as Program Scientist for the Living with a Star mission and science line\, grant research lines\, and Heliophysics and Planetary missions. Before joining NASA\, he was Supervisor of the Earth and Planetary Atmospheres Section at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)\, where his research focused on developing remote sensing techniques as well as data analysis and modeling of geophysical and planetary phenomena.  \n\n\n\nDr. Talaat received his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering from the University of Washington\, and a Master’s of Science and doctorate from the University of Michigan in Atmospheric and Space Sciences. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jinni Meehan\n\n\n\nAssistant Director for Space Policy\, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy \n\n\n\nJoin the MSBR for our luncheon in July with special guest\, Dr. Jinni Meehan! \n\n\n\nDr. Jinni Meehan is the new Assistant Director for Space Policy at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). \n\n\n\nBefore assuming her role at OSTP in February\, Dr. Meehan made significant contributions to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\, where she served as the National Space Weather Program Manager since 2018\, supporting plans\, projects\, and policies to strengthen the service capacity of the National Weather Service’s space weather operations. Prior to this\, she held positions at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC). Additionally\, she serves as an Adjunct Professor at Millersville University of Pennsylvania for their graduate program\, “Space Weather and Environment: Science\, Policy\, and Communication.” \n\n\n\nDr. Meehan earned her Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte\, followed by a Master of Science in Atmospheric and Space Sciences from Hampton University. She later completed her Ph.D. in Physics at Utah State University and conducted postdoctoral research at the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology. \n\n\n\nDr. Meehan’s distinguished career in space science and policy is characterized by leadership positions and innovative contributions\, for which she has been recognized with the DOC Gold Medal and NOAA’s Order of Sherman’s Lagoon. The tournament will be a Shot Gun Start starting at 8:30AM EST on Thursday\, June 20\, 2024. \n\n\n\nRegistration: $135 per person. Registration fee includes 18 holes of golf\, cart\, driving range\, and catered lunch. \n\n\n\nThe University of Maryland Golf Course in College Park\, Maryland\, is the home of the Maryland Terrapins men’s and women’s golf teams. The semi-private championship course was designed in 1955 by George Cobb\, the course has been a longtime host of state and regional tournaments and hosts over 50\,000 rounds of golf annually. The course is located in the northern perimeter of the University of Maryland\, College Park’s campus\, and is home to a 45-station driving range and a 5\,000-square-foot (460 m2) putting green. \n\n\n\nA 35\,000-square-foot (3\,300 m2)\, plantation-style clubhouse\, named Mulligan’s Grill and Pub\, is located on the course. Completed in 1999 for $3 million\, Mulligan’s houses a full-service bar\, banquet facility\, and pro shop. Goddard’s sites include the primary campus in Maryland\, Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia\, the Katherine Johnson Independent Verification & Validation Facility in West Virginia\, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York\, the White Sands Complex in New Mexico\, and the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Texas. Goddard is responsible for the oversight and execution of a $4 billion portfolio and is home to the nation’s largest concentration of scientists\, engineers and technologists dedicated to Earth and space science. Its workforce consists of more than 10\,000 employees\, both civil servant and contractor. \n\n\n\nPrior to joining NASA\, Dr. Lystrup was vice president and general manager of Ball Aerospace’s Civil Space Strategic Business Unit\, where she was responsible for the company’s portfolio of civil space systems spanning across all science fields\, operational weather and Earth observation\, as well as advanced technologies development objectives. In this role\, she led Ball’s contributions to several missions\, such as NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope\, Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE)\, Landsat 9\, and the Roman Space Telescope. \n\n\n\nDr. Lystrup has also served as senior director for Ball’s Civil Space Advanced Systems and Business Development\, where she managed new business activities for NASA\, NOAA\, and other civilian U.S. government agencies as well as for academia and other science organizations. In addition\, she served in the company’s Strategic Operations organization\, based in Washington D.C.\, where she led Ball’s space sciences portfolio. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Stephen Volz\n\n\n\nAssistant Administrator for Satellite and Information Services\, NOAA \n\n\n\nJoin the MSBR for our luncheon in May with special guest\, Dr. Stephen Volz! \n\n\n\nStephen Volz serves as the Assistant Administrator for NOAA’s Satellite and Information Service. \n\n\n\nDr. Volz has 35 years of professional experience in aerospace. As the NOAA lead for all space Earth Observations\, Dr. Volz helps define the space and information architecture for NOAA\, and\, working in partnership with NASA and other US agencies\, helps guide the U.S. approach to future civil space observations. He is a leader in the international Earth observation community\, serving as the NOAA Principal both to the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) and to the Coordinating Group of Meteorological Satellites (CGMS). Dr. Volz is the Principal U.S. representative to the Executive Committee of the international Group on Earth Observations (GEO)\, and in this capacity he helps lead efforts coordinating with global participants on the use of global Earth Observations data\, including satellite-based observations\, to further the delivery of comprehensive environmental information to communities around the world. He serves as the Co-Chair of the NOAA Observing Systems Council and is also a member of the NOAA Executive Council. Dr Volz also served as Acting Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Environmental Observation and Prediction (ASEOP)\, for almost 33 months over two periods 2016-2022.  \n\n\n\nDr. Volz previously served as the Associate Director for Flight Programs in the Earth Science Division of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate where he managed all of NASA’s Earth Science flight missions and associated activities. Prior to serving as the Flight Program Director\, Dr. Volz was the Earth Science program executive for a series of Earth Science missions\, including EO-3 GIFTS\, CloudSat\, CALIPSO\, and ICESat\, and he led the Senior Review for the Earth Science operating missions. Dr. Volz worked in industry at Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corporation from 1997–2002\, where he was the Project Manager for the Spitzer Space Telescope (formerly the Space Infrared Telescope Facility) superfluid helium cryostat and other flight projects. From 1986–1997 Dr. Volz worked for NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center as an instrument manager\, an I&T Manager\, a systems engineer\, and a cryogenic systems engineer on missions and instruments including the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE)\, among others. \n\n\n\nDr. Volz is a member of several professional societies\, including the American Physical Society (M’82)\, the American Astronomical Society (M’87)\, the American Geophysical Union (M’02)\, and the American Meteorological Society (M’08). He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)\, an active member of and participant in the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS)\, and a member of the GRSS Administration Committee (AdCom) for the period of 2013–2015. \n\n\n\nDr. Volz has a doctorate in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1986)\, a master’s in Physics from Illinois (1981)\, and a bachelor’s in Physics from the University of Virginia (1980). DESCRIPTION:Casey Swails\n\n\n\nNASA Deputy Associate Administrator \n\n\n\nJoin the MSBR for our luncheon in February with special guest\, Casey Swails. \n\n\n\nCasey Swails is NASA’s deputy associate administrator\, acting as the agency’s deputy chief operating officer for more than 18\,000 employees and an annual budget of more than $25 billion. She is the deputy and principal advisor to the associate administrator for overall day-to-day operations and long-term strategic direction across NASA’s 10 field centers\, mission directorates\, and staff organizations. She establishes the overall strategy\, framework\, and structure for NASA’s integrated mission support portfolio and builds and advances the agency’s industry partnerships. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, she is leading NASA 2040\, the agency’s strategic initiative to ensure NASA remains the preeminent institution for research\, technology\, and engineering to lead science\, aeronautics\, and space exploration for humanity in the year 2040. \n\n\n\nPreviously\, Swails served as the chief of staff and senior advisor to the associate administrator\, as well as the agency’s acting deputy chief of staff during the presidential transition. In those positions\, she ensured the effective flow of operations across NASA’s workforce and represented the agency in the alignment of policy\, strategy\, priorities\, and program development. \n\n\n\nPrior to joining the administrator’s office at NASA\, she led many of the agency’s significant change management initiatives. This included leadership of the largest human capital transformation effort in NASA’s history\, resulting in the successful merger of 10 separate human resources offices into one enterprise organization and the realignment of more than 500 human capital employees and corresponding $90 million budget. \n\n\n\nAlso noteworthy was her leadership in the design and creation of the agencywide Executive Services Division\, which manages programs for attracting\, retaining\, and developing NASA’s executive cadre of more than 600 senior leaders. With more than 19 years at NASA\, Swails has had substantial involvement working across multiple NASA centers and with many of the agency’s human spaceflight programs\, including the International Space Station Program\, Orion\, and the early Commercial Crew and Gateway programs\, which are recognized as leading models for the agency today. \n\n\n\nSwails holds a Bachelor of Science in management from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Business Administration from Duke University\, and she has completed executive education at Harvard Business School and INSEAD. She was recognized as one of Georgia Tech’s 40 Under 40 distinguished alumni and was a fellow in the International Women’s Forum. She is the second woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor and the first woman of color and immigrant elected to statewide office in Maryland. \n\n\n\nBorn in Andhra Pradesh\, India\, Miller and her family immigrated to the United States when she was 7 years old. The daughter of a mechanical engineer\, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. \n\n\n\nMiller has devoted her life to public service and removing systemic barriers to opportunity. \n\n\n\nAs a civil and transportation engineer in Montgomery County’s Department of Transportation\, Miller worked to improve the safety of the public and alleviate traffic by creating equitable access to transportation throughout the county. For 25 years\, she oversaw programs that advanced access to schools and employment centers\, and made community facilities safe for pedestrians\, bicyclists\, transit users\, and people with differing abilities. \n\n\n\nFrom 2010 to 2018\, she represented District 15 in the Maryland House of Delegates\, where she worked with her constituents to create legislation to invest in STEM education\, streamline the regulatory process for small businesses\, and was a champion for working families\, survivors of domestic abuse\, and the environment. \n\n\n\nMiller served on the Ways and Means Committee and its Revenue\, Transportation\, and Education Subcommittees. Additionally\, in her second term\, she served on the Appropriations Committee\, where she served as chair of the Oversight of Personnel Subcommittee\, vice chair of the Transportation and Environment Subcommittee\, and vice chair of the Capital Budget Subcommittee. \n\n\n\nFor over 30 years\, she has lived in Montgomery County with her husband David\, where they raised three daughters. \n\n\n\nAs Lieutenant Governor\, her policy profile includes matters relating to transportation\, mental health\, and STEM equity. \n\n\n\nShe serves as chair of the Governor’s Work Zone Safety Work Group\, dedicated to making highway work zones safer and protecting the lives of workers\,motorists\, and law enforcement. \n\n\n\nThe Lieutenant Governor also chairs Maryland’s first Council on Interfaith Outreach\, which convenes faith leaders from across religions and across the state of Maryland to bridge divides\, increase religious tolerance\, end hate\, and better serve all communities.

In this role\, Dr. Kapnick is responsible for advancing policy and program direction for NOAA’s science and technology priorities. \n\n\n\nDr. Kapnick has extensive experience at the intersection of climate science and economics. Most recently\, she served as a managing director at J.P. Morgan in the role of senior climate scientist and sustainability strategist for asset and wealth management. While at J.P. Morgan\, she supported sustainability and climate action efforts and served as an advisor on new business and investment opportunities and risks. \n\n\n\nPreviously\, Dr. Kapnick was a physical scientist and deputy division leader on seasonal to decadal variability and predictability at NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL). At GFDL\, her work spanned seasonal climate prediction\, mountain snowpack\, extreme storms\, water security and climate impacts. She was an expert and reviewer for NOAA’s Small Business Innovation Research Program\, a member of its Eastern Region Climate Team\, a science panelist for Climate.gov and the NOAA team lead for the NASA High Mountain Asia Team. \n\n\n\nDr. Kapnick is a member of the American Geophysical Union\, American Meteorological Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science. Prior to her graduate studies\, she spent two years as an investment banking analyst with Goldman Sachs covering financial institutions. Garvin\n\n\n\nSenior Fellow & Chief Scientist\, NASA GSFC \n\n\n\nJoin the MSBR for our luncheon in December with special guest\, Dr. James Garvin presenting “Highlights of Maryland’s Dazzling Year in Space 2023”! \n\n\n\nDr. James B. Garvin is the NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Chief Scientist. He provides strategic advice and analysis on the scientific priorities and directions to the Center Director and senior leadership\, as well as to NASA Headquarters. As a veteran Earth and planetary scientist within NASA in a career that has spanned more than 37 years\, Dr. Garvin brings his experience with interdisciplinary science and instrumentation in helping to direct the scientific trajectory of the Center. Prior to coming to Goddard\, Garvin served as the NASA Chief Scientist\, advising three separate Administrators on issues ranging from science strategies associated with the Vision for Space Exploration to those involved in rebalancing the NASA science portfolio. In addition\, Dr. Garvin served as the chief scientist for Mars exploration from 2000 until 2004 and spearheaded the development of the scientific strategy that led NASA to select such missions as the Mars Exploration Rovers\, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter\, the Phoenix polar lander\, and the Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity rover). He received two NASA Outstanding Leadership Medals for his work with the science behind the Mars Exploration Program. He is also the recipient of three Presidential Rank Awards for his contributions to science at NASA spanning his career. \n\n\n\nDuring his career\, he has been a Co-Investigator on the Mars Observer\, Mars Global Surveyor\, NEAR-Shoemaker\, Radarsat-1\,2/RCM\, Mars Curiosity Rover\, OSIRIS-REx\, and ENVISAT missions. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles and other popular articles about space exploration of Mars\, Venus\, and the Moon. Presently\, he is Principal Investigator of the recently-selected DAVINCI mission to Venus\, slated for launch in June 2029\, and the first in situ mission to Venus since 1985. \n\n\n\nDr. Garvin earned his Ph.D in the Geological Sciences from Brown University in 1984 under the mentorship of Professors J. W. Head III and T. A. Mutch. He also received an MS from Stanford University in Computer Sciences and a second MS from Brown in Planetary Geosciences. He graduated with highest honors from Brown University in 1978 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Trimble\n\n\n\nPolicy Chief and Director of Small Business Programs\, SDA \n\n\n\nJoin the MSBR for our luncheon in November with special guest\, Paula Trimble! \n\n\n\nMs. Paula Trimble is Policy Chief and Director of Small Business Programs at the Space Development Agency in the U.S. Department of Defense. At the SDA\, Ms. Trimble is driving policy solutions to reduce barriers in the acquisition process and enable small businesses and start-ups to work more easily with the federal government. She formulates and leads SDA’s congressional  engagement strategies in support of the annual defense appropriations  and authorization processes\, garnering significant increases to the agency’s budget to accelerate delivery of missile tracking capabilities for the nation. \n\n\n\nMs. Trimble has always been attracted to disruptive organizations at the nexus of policy and technology. She started her career in the Washington\, DC-area as a reporter at Space News and Federal Computer Week. She served in the U.S. Department of Commerce Office of Space Commercialization\, helping promote the expansion of commercial markets for GPS\, satellite communications\, and satellite imagery. \n\n\n\nFollowing that\, she was an industry analyst at the Office of Commercial Space Transportation in the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration\, helping shepherd a new reusable launch sector and supporting the agency during the historic 2004 SpaceShipOne X-Prize flights. Ms. Trimble spent more than eight years overseeing prototyping and experimentation efforts in the DoD’s Rapid Reaction Technology Office. Most recently\, she was Senior Principal at Lewis-Burke Associates LLC\, leading the lobbying firm’s national security practice in support of university researchers\, scientific societies\, and national research institutes\, including facilitating the significant growth of a DoD Manufacturing Innovation Institute and engaging with policymakers on issues of interest to small businesses across the research enterprise. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Registration\n\n\n\nIf you are not a member of the MSBR\, Sign Up Today! DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mark Clampin\n\n\n\nDirector Astrophysics Division\, Science Mission Directorate\, NASA \n\n\n\nJoin the MSBR for our luncheon in October with special guest\, Dr. Mark Clampin! \n\n\n\nDr. Clampin is the Astrophysics Division Director in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington\, DC. The goals of the Astrophysics Division are to understand how the universe works\, understand how we got here and to address the question\, are we alone? \n\n\n\nUntil August 2022\, Dr. Clampin was the Director of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate (SED) at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) where he led the Astrophysics\, Solar System\, Heliophysics and Earth Science Divisions\, together with the high performance computing office. \n\n\n\nAt GSFC\, he previously served as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Observatory Project Scientist\, and subsequently as Director of the Astrophysics Science Division and Deputy Director of SED. Prior to joining GSFC\, Dr Clampin was the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Group Lead at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI)\, where he worked on the first four Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Servicing Missions. Dr. Clampin is a Co-Investigator with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS)\, and the Advanced camera for Surveys (ACS) science team and served as the Detector Scientist\, responsible for the delivery of three focal plane camera systems. His research interests focus on studying the formation and evolution of planetary systems.
